Mercedes star Lewis Hamilton had the whole of Formula One smirking at his expense on Sunday as he pulled into the McLaren pits during the Malaysian Grand Prix.

Hamilton, who made a big-money switch from McLaren to Mercedes ahead of the 2013 season, completely forgot which team he drives for when he pulled in for fresh tyres on the eighth lap of the race at Sepang.

The bemused McLaren engineers – who were standing around waiting for Hamilton’s former team-mate Jenson Button – merely chuckled and waved at Hamilton, who realised his mistake and carried on down to the right garage.

Perhaps it was force of habit, or perhaps Hamilton was simply too busy scanning the garages for girlfriend Nicole Scherzinger – who was on hand in Malaysia for the race – to notice that he was in the wrong place.

Luckily for Hamilton, the Mercedes pits are further along the pit lane than the McLaren ones – otherwise he’d have had to drive all the way round once more.

No doubt few would have been laughing harder than Button – but Hamilton’s former colleague soon had the smile wiped off his face when that self-same pit crew failed to put his front wheel back on properly during a pit stop on the 37th lap, a blunder which happened when Button was in the lead.

And in any case, Hamilton’s blunder was nothing compared to that of Fernando Alonso: the Ferrari star decided to keep on driving despite a crash on the first lap seeing his front wing half fall off.

Despite sparks flying up from the broken car, Alonso soldiered on and drove straight past the pits – only for the wing to come off completely just seconds later, sending him off into the gravel trap and ending his race.
